Committee News

A club is only as strong as its members! The support of club members is not only a requirement of increasing the strength of any club – but a sign of growth. Different people coming together to share their talents and their expertise is invaluable if one is to grow- not only as a club- but also as individuals dedicated to their breed.

One Person's response to AKC "Neutral" stand on CA1634

To: doglaw
Cc:pet-law@yahoogroups.com;capla@yahoogroups.com;showdogs-plus@yahoogroups.com
Subject: [SDP] AKC position on AB 1634 (was: 'AKC sez, like Peta, Scr-w dog breeders')

Dear AKC: From your form letter response:  We cannot continue to oppose the bill as the amended bill language  addresses responsible dog ownership issues. The AKC has a long  history of advocating for responsible dog ownership, including compliance with leash laws and license requirements. Allowing a dog to habitually roam at large is not responsible dog ownership. If jurisdictions have laws requiring licensing of dogs, AKC encourages dog owners to be compliant with local and state laws, we do not advocate that individuals knowingly disobey laws. Horsemanure. You really don't get it, do you? You either support dogs or you support the people who want to end dogs. Those are the rules the AR movement has established: you either you play by them or you change them. OF COURSE this is tough -- that's their intent. But when the going gets tough, being a coward is neither useful nor endearing. A whole lot of people are taking a whole lot more heat than you ever would. Your whining is truly disgusting. Nobody asks you to advocate for irresponsibility or violating laws. All you need do is oppose laws that will unfavorably impact the purebred dog and the public's freedom to buy and own quality dogs. Where ARE your brains? Labeling a bill as promoting responsible dog ownership does not make it so. Only fools evaluate a bill based on the statements of the promoters. You should say "What this bill would really do is ..." and then take a position based on the true impact. If nobody there is able to do that, you have access to many people who can. Should AB 1634 pass, it will be used almost exclusively against people who breed and register with the AKC or otherwise breed responsibly. The at-large and unlicensed dogs of what you would call irresponsible owners (and others would call poor and ignorant people) are rarely reclaimed if found at large and aren't going to be targeted for licensing violations: If they are caught, almost all of them will be surrendered. Furthermore, every battle prepares the field for the next. What do you think will happen to California breeders and clubs should AB 1634 pass? People will move away, try to hide, spay/neuter, send dogs out of state, show and breed less often. Clubs will shrink and become less active. We will enter the next battle on worse terrain than we are now. When the AKC begins to understand that supporting laws that are intended solely to end the planned breeding of dogs is bad for dogs and owners, AND promotes irresponsibility, AND increases public costs for animal services, then if it also begins to actually care about dogs more than its own clean skirts and white gloves, it will become a positive force in the world of pet legislation. Since you don't understand these basics, I won't bother to mention the stupidity of tossing cat fanciers into the branch chipper. Supporting allies is obviously too difficult a concept. Should this bill pass you'll have a big share of the responsibility. Walt Hutchens Timbreblue Whippets
