Committee News
A club is only as strong as its members! The support of club members is not only a requirement of increasing the strength of any club – but a sign of growth. Different people coming together to share their talents and their expertise is invaluable if one is to grow- not only as a club- but also as individuals dedicated to their breed.

CA needs YOUR help! NOW- CA 1634
We've all got strong feelings about the AKC action on AB 1634. If this doesn't lead to cleaning house at the board of directors -- they are the ones who are responsible for this debacle -- I don't know what it will take. However, I think we should take direction from Laura, Brat, and others, who have pointed out that right now the urgent business is beating AB 1634. Since we hear that the bill is likely to be voted on on Monday, the weekend needs to be devoted to contacting Senators AGAIN, and telling them that the new version is STILL a bad idea. If you are located in California, be sure to write or call your own Senator FIRST, to say that you are a constituent and strongly oppose this bill. 'Constituent' is a MAGIC word in lawmakers offices; when they hear it, they think VOTES! GET FRIENDS to do the same. In state people have more clout on these issues than us out-of-state'ers, because you have the power of the vote. So pick up your vote and wave it at 'em! You can contact YOUR Senator at: http://saveourdogs.net/ You'll find links that will get you names, addresses, phone and fax numbers, sample letters, and more, halfway down the page at: http://noab1634.com/ Out of state -- we've been asked to help, so please do. Remember, be polite, be factual. If AB 1634 passes in California, we can count on it showing up in other states as well. Some points that might be useful in talking or writing about the bill: 1. Brat is right: I wouldn't mention the change in the AKC's position. If the issue is raised by the person you're speaking to, I would say something like "The AKC has gotten badly crossways with its members on this issue. The AKC doesn't live or vote in California. Californians remain STRONGLY opposed to AB 1634." 2. AB 1634 will do nothing to deal with irresponsible ownership. Dogs that are irresponsibly allowed to roam are rarely retrieved from shelters anyhow. Irresponsibly owned unlicensed dogs will be surrendered. 3. Most owners of unsterilized dogs are unable to afford the operation. AB 1634 will lead to more of these animals being surrendered, increasing shelter costs. 4. AB 1634 will rapidly drive the best breeders out of breeding or out of the state. This will make the other problems worse. We can deal with the AKC at a later time. BEATING AB 1634 IS THE PRIORITY.
